Storm Door

Hang a storm door for an extra layer of protection from the cold. A traditional storm door used to be made out of the old fashioned thin layer of aluminum and a single pane of glass that you could change in the warmer months to a screen. The times have changed. These doors have been modernized and improved on in style and craftsmanship. They are now a lot stronger, and one of the least expensive ways to add fashion, and most importantly, energy efficiency.

Replacing one has become a lot easier in recent years as the manufacturers have made installations more of a do it yourself type project. They have provided standard sizes that will fit almost any door openings. Prices for a good storm door run anywhere between 0.00 to 0.00.

How to select the proper size? To find the correct size opening you will need a tape measure. Measure the the width and the height from door jamb to door jamb. Then the height from the threshold to the top casing. Most front doors are a standard size 36"x80". However they maybe 32" or 30" wide. Most door height is a standard 80". Nearly everyone is sold as reversible. Which means that you can install it with the hinge on either side. So you can choose which way you would like the door to swing. You typically mount them on the outside of the exterior door jamb.

High quality storm doors use low-e glass. See windows for a complete understanding of this term. The frames are usually made of aluminum, steel, fiberglass, or wood. A better quality type door will have foam insulation in the door. Also it should have insulation built into the frames. Never add a full glass panel if the exterior door gets more than a few hours of direct sun each day. The glass will trap too much heat against the entry door and possibly damage it. They come in a variety of styles from full view glass plates. There are also half glass, or what some manufacturers may call a cross buck door. Some have ornate kick plates that are made out of brass to protect the bottom of the door. Still others come with dead bolt locks and some really offer no energy efficiency at all but are put in place for security protection. These type of doors are normally very heavy and are made of iron or some type of steel composite. They can have a self- storage containment for built in windows or screens depending on the season that your in. Some act like a double hung window where you push down or pull up. Some of the nicer features that the manufactures are offering now are solar screens to reduce fading to carpets or furniture and to reduce heat built up between both the doors.

Storm doors now come in array of colors and finishes. The most basic is the classic white. However you find such colors as hunter green, almond, gloss black, red, indigo blue, brown or even yellow. They also can be brought in different types of finishes such as natural mill, bronze, antique black, and antique white or even all brass.

We feel that storm doors are an easy Think Green Energy Saver item. They can be cost effective and esthetically pleasing. They also help to save energy and reduce our need for more energy. They are environmentally friendly and should help on those high energy bills in the winter time.
