Virginia Beach Homes Need Hurricane Shutters for Storm Protection

Virginia Beach is located on the Atlantic Ocean at the opening of the Chesapeake Bay. Virginia Beach is the most inhabited city in Virginia, and is a humid, sub-tropical area, with mild winters and warm, wet summers. Because of the location, it is prone to hurricanes and tropical storms. Hurricane Isabel, which hit Virginia Beach in 2003, was the costliest disaster in Virginia's history. Hurricane force winds were recorded at 107 mph, and Isabel caused significant beach erosion and home damage before she was finished.

Hurricane Isabel is not the only hurricane to damage Virginia Beach:

STORM DOORS

Hurricane Charley passed over southeast Virginia Beach, and winds were recorded at 104 mph and over 110,000 homes were without power during and after the storm.

Hurricane Bonnie knocked out power to 320,000 customers in the Norfolk-Virginia Beach area. Structural damage to buildings occurred. The heavy rain and storm surge produced street flooding in Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Portsmouth. Storm damages in Virginia totaled more than million.

When Hurricane Floyd hit the area and caused rainfall of up to 20 inches in some parts of Virginia. More than 300 roads were closed in the peak of the storm from flooding and downed trees.

Obviously, homes in the Virginia Beach area need storm protection, and hurricane shutters are one of the best ways that you can protect your home. Hurricane shutters protect you from the missile impacts that occur during a storm, also keep pressure changes from occurring quickly inside your home, and keep out wind and rain that storms bring. And out of all the hurricane shutters available on the market today, rolling shutters are the best available.

Roll-down shutters can be closed in a matter of moments when a storm is imminent. Rolling shutters cover your windows and doors with a touch of a button, and if there is no power (during Hurricane Isabel, 1.8 million electrical customers were left without power) there is a manual option to roll them down. Whether the power is on or not, roll down shutters have got you covered. They remain on your home year-round, so there is no putting up and taking down when storms come and go, and they are both convenient and unobtrusive. They can be matched to your home's color, making them both attractive and practical.

No matter what kind of hurricane shutters that you choose, they are necessary to protect your home during a storm. Install hurricane shutters today and provide your home and family with the defense against the storm that they deserve.

Three Reasons to Choose Larson Storm Doors

A house is a huge investment and should be treated with great care. To maximize its value over the long-term, it's essential to take good care of it. Since it's important to protect the value of your house, be sure that you do so with quality products. During storms, front doors can really take a beating. So how do you protect them? Your best bet is to check out some storm doors. If you are looking for unparalleled quality in the industry, I highly recommend Larson storm doors. You can't find a better array of features. Below I'll discuss these features in more detail.

Higher Quality Roll Screen
One popular design involves a top window that slides vertically, with a connected screen. Larson storm doors excel at this design. This feature allows you to slide down the window in order to access the screen. The most important thing is the durability of the storm door, and Larson leads the pack here because of the fact that it uses thicker, sturdier metal than its competition. Able to withstand a wide array of weather forecasts, it's routinely chosen by those who have really done their homework.

STORM DOORS

Varied Material Selection
Larson storm doors are available in a wide array of materials. In addition to the standard of wood, you can also choose fiberglass and PVC. Wood has been a popular option for many years. But since wood is not able to last long when exposed to the elements unless a lot of work is invested in sealing it with protectants, it's steadily losing popularity. As a result, aluminum is quickly replacing wood as the industry standard. Combining quality with price, aluminum also has the affordability factor. Affordable quality is something we can all appreciate! Fiberglass may be an attractive option for you if you're willing to shell out a little more cash. It won't corrode like aluminum eventually will, and it can be fashioned in the image of wood if you like.

Top-Knotch Durability
When protecting possibly your most valuable asset (your house), it's important to do it right. Don't skimp to save a few bucks, because you'll just end up spending ten times that in the future because you didn't spend it in the first place. Larson storm doors are installed by professionals so you can rest assured that your property is protected on a professional level. Since doors are in motion so much and prone to being slammed or hit by objects entering and exiting, it's important to ensure that they are protected by real quality fixtures. That's what you'll get with Larson. Sleep peacefully at night knowing that not only are your storm doors made from quality materials, but the installation procedure is done by highly trained professionals. And since all doors are different, you'll be sure to get custom installation.

You'll be very happy with your decision to go with Larson storm doors! No matter what kind of budget you have, you can choose a material that will work for you. I guarantee you'll be happy with your decision. Good luck!

Can Roof Hail Damage Result in Replacing an Entire Roof?

How much damage to your roof can come during a hail storm? In Georgia, hail storms are not that uncommon and many homeowners visually see hail several times during the year. That is the case in metro Atlanta, where the last few years have resulted in elevated hail activity.

storm doors lowes

Most people are somewhat aware of the damage hail can cause, in particular the larger variety of hail that is notorious for damaging and denting cars. This awareness doesn't always fully translate into the impact a hail storm can have on your home's roof. While you can visually see the damage to your car after a hail storm, you can't always see the damage to a roof. The damage you can't see can put the longevity of your roof at risk.

STORM DOORS

Roof replacement due to hail damage is one of the most expensive fixes for homeowners and insurance companies. Hail can vary in size dramatically, falling as small as the size of tiny pellets, or as large as baseballs. It is typically the larger hail that can cause enough damage to your asphalt roof to justify a roof replacement.

Asphalt Roof Shingle Damage from Hail:

Hail damage to asphalt roofs occur when hail beating against the surface of asphalt shingle results in the protective granular surface of the shingle to loosen and potentially fall off. When the granules are loosened, the asphalt shingles loses some of its protection potential and becomes vulnerable to additional damage.

- Note: Damaged asphalt layers can potentially allow water seepage into the roof.

- Tip: If the granules of an asphalt shingle are removed by a hail storm, the shingle's longevity can be severely diminished.

Signs of Hail Damage to an Asphalt Roof:

- Bruises or small dents in the asphalt shingle
- Granulation is displaced exposing the asphalt
- Granulation has settled at the base of your downspouts
- The spots hit by hail usually leave a soft spot in the shingle
- Significantly damaged metal air vents on the roof indicate similar hit pattern for roof
- Damage and denting of siding, or gutters

If my Roof is damaged, how fast should I replace it?

There is a misconception if your roof sustains damage from a hail storm that your roof needs to be replaced immediately. You'll find some conflicting evidence online from other roofers that advise immediately replacing your roof. In Georgia for example, any reliable roofing contractor in Atlanta should tell you otherwise. Typically the damage sustained from a hail storm will pose no immediate threat to your roof. The threat is in the longevity of the roof, because hail can dramatically decrease a roof's life expectancy. The deteriorated protection from a roof that is not expected to last its full life is why insurance companies will authorize the replacement of your roof.

Will Homeowner's Insurance Cover a New Roof?

This answer varies by the coverage on your homeowner's insurance policy. For some homeowners the answer is "yes." If you believe your home has been the victim of hail, contact your insurance company to determine if your policy will cover the damage. For many homeowners they will be able to have the roof repaired, or replaced and will need to pay a deductable.

- Tip: If you are unsure if you homeowner's policy covers hail damage to your roof, contact your insurance company.

Caution: Avoid Storm Chasers!

Homeowners need to beware of 'storm chasers.' A storm chaser typically consists of an out of town roofing contractor that goes door to door after a hail storm soliciting for business. While it may seem tempting and convenient, these roofers can do more harm than good. Make sure any roofer you look to work with has a good reputation in the community. Look for a roofer that is located locally and check references. Look for references that are over a year old and ones that are more recent, within the last 30 days. Finally never give a deposit for a roof. A reliable roofer will only ask for payment once the roof has been complete.

If you think your home has sustained roof hail damage, get a professional opinion. Experienced roofing contractors should be willing to provide free roofing estimates upon request.

Standing on the Promises - Finding Comfort in the Midst of Your Storms by Joan M Blake

Finding Hope in the Rough Times

storm doors lowes

"Standing on the Promises: Finding Comfort, Hope, and Purpose in the Midst of Your Storm" combines memoir, inspiration, and encouragement, with a promise of hope and joy for times of crisis. Joan Blake (no relation to this reviewer) tells of growing up in Trinidad, of receiving a college education in Boston, of her engagement and marriage, of the early days of beginning a family, and of how she found find peace and hope in the midst of crisis and chaos when in the depth of devastating disappointment.

STORM DOORS

Each chapter concludes with an original prayer poem of inspiration, a heart stirring response, and a thought provoking reflection. I especially appreciated Joan's insight into human nature in light of man's spiritual hunger. These meaningful prayers are as moving and relevant to the individual reader today as they were when Joan was inspired to write them during her times of crisis throughout her own spiritual journey.

Another unique feature of the book is that in addition to providing practical help for the individual reader, the material can easily be adapted as a small group discussion guide, for use when mentoring, or in a discipleship relationship.

"Standing on the Promises: Finding Comfort, Hope, and Purpose in the Midst of Your Storm" is a compelling example of the results of walking in an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ while stepping out in faith. Joan's is a powerful message of hope, well-timed and applicable to all who find themselves in the tight spots we so often find ourselves in today.

Entry Door Selection, Avoid the Top 10 Most Common Pitfalls

When selecting a new entry door it is easy to be wooed by a beautiful piece of decorative glass or on the other end of the spectrum a super low price tag. But before you run out and plunk down that hard earned dollar, take into consideration the following Top 10 tips to avoid heartache or worse headaches from your new door selection.

storm doors with pet access

I can tell you that each person will rate these differently depending on how big a problem they would create but every item on this list will turn into a problem if not addressed. I am going to assume you are shopping for a complete door, meaning a door hung in a new frame.

STORM DOORS

You must know the measurements, not just the height and width of the existing door but the often forgotten measurement of how thick is the door frame. The standard frame you will find in most building centers is either 4-9/16" or 6-9/16" for a standard 2x4 or 2x6 wall. But what if your old wall is something different? Anyone can order you a door with a frame to match your wall, it will cost slightly more but if not do you have the skills to rebuild or extend the stock frame? What color is your hardware? Are you willing to settle for the stock brass hinges that come standard on most doors or will you confirm your hardware color and order your door with matching hinges to avoid the cost and labor of changing those stock hinges? Which way does your door swing? I do not just mean when you are pulling the handle towards you is the handle on the left or right? I mean does your door swing into the house or towards the outside. This concern will affect the frame and sill setup and if you try to reverse the wrong type you are inviting a leak for sure. Are you aware that most manufacturers are offering their products with maintenance free metal or vinyl cladding over the frame of the door. You do not have to settle for a wood frame that needs periodic painting and while I am on this subject make sure your new door has frame saver technology so it will not rot. If you are considering a beautiful new stainable fiberglass door do you realize the special gel stain and finishing process required if you stain it yourself? Check to see the cost of having your new door professionally stained; it could be money well spent when investing so much and expecting a realistic look when finished. Do you also realize that the beautiful new stained fiberglass door you purchase will need to be resealed per manufacturer's recommendation on average every one to two years? Who will handle that chore? Did you know that most steel doors sold today only have a primer coating on the surface? If you leave that unpainted for more than 90 days you void the door warranty. Once again most door providers offer a professional finish process in a wide variety of colors with a finish comparable to auto finish. If you want the security of a deadbolt did you know you could have all the holes for it pre-drilled in your new door and frame for under ? When it comes to installing the door remember two things. Most new doors come with a package of long screws in a bag attached to the frame. Be sure and install these screws one in each hinge after the door has been properly plumbed and leveled to assure a solid anchor to the framed wall. Lastly, make sure and properly seal your new doors exterior by installing a sill dam with caulking below the door and sealing the top and sides with a sealing system like Tyvek Straightflash. If you short cut this part of the process you are just asking for a leaking door and that usually results in damaged entryway flooring.

I have been out on countless job sites in the last 30 years to examine door complaints of defective product and 9 times out of 10 I find either a modified door not functioning like it was intended or an improperly installed door.

Soundproofing On a Budget

Soundproofing your home does not have to cost a fortune. If you are under new construction we all know that money it tight. There are many common hardware store items that can be used for soundproofing that won't break the bank. Most people don't think of sand as a soundproofing material, but it actually a very good for soundproofing. If your walls are re-enforced, you can use sand in the stud cavities as a soundproofing material. You must be sure that your walls can withstand the weight of the sand. Always use refined or purified sand, not common beach sand that could cause mold or have other bacterial in it that will cause you problems down the line.

storm doors lowes

Let's say you are in the middle of new construction on your new home and you know that one of the rooms is going to be your new home theater. You want that room soundproofed but you budget is already stretched to its limits. Did you know that you can use common rolled roofing material from Home Depot or Lowe's? Rolled roofing is what is generally used on buildings like chicken coops and other roofs where aesthetics is not an issue but stopping leaks is. Rolled roofing generally comes in 30' long rolls and is 3' wide. I hear the little wheels in your brain spinning at a hundred miles and hour. What am I going to do with all this rolled roofing material? Well, I'm glad you asked. One of the best soundproofing agents on the market today is mass loaded vinyl, (MLV for short) Mass loaded vinyl is a high grade vinyl material that is impregnated with barium salts and silica to give it the same soundproofing properties as lead sheeting without the hazards associated with lead.

DOORS LOWES

Now MLV can cost from .25 to .00 per sq ft and when you are building your new dream home that just might be beyond your budget. So now enters the rolled roofing material. I am suggesting that you stretch the rolled roofing material across the studs or the joists if you are soundproofing your ceiling. You will staple or nail the rolled roofing directly to the stud structure like a membrane across the face of the studs. The next section of rolled roofing should overlap the first piece by at least 1". It is essential to caulk the over lap with an acoustical caulk (hey you have to buy something from the soundproofing guy for giving you all this free advice, right?). The acoustical caulk can be purchased from any reputable soundproofing company like Acoustical Solutions, Sound Isolation Company, or Soundproofing America. Any of these companies will carry a good quality acoustical caulk and can ship it to you. Now back to our soundproofed walls. Once you have the rolled roofing in place and you have caulked the 1" over lap, you will also need to caulk around the entire perimeter of the newly installed rolled roofing membrane. There is a little saying we have in the soundproofing industry, "Caulk is cheap". I think you get the pun. The point is, use as much caulk as you need to seal every seam gap or crack in your soundproof membrane. You want this roofing material to be as sealed and air tight as possible. Now seeing as the rolled roofing does not have the same soundproofing horsepower as MLV, I would strongly suggest a second layer of the rolled roofing be applied to each wall and to the ceiling area that you that you are soundproofing. Stagger the seams wherever possible This is a small investment to have a soundproof room for your home theater or simply a quiet place to study.

Once you have your 2 layers of rolled roofing installed on your walls and ceiling and everything is caulked liberally, it is time for the finished layer of drywall. I would suggest installing a layer of 5/8" fire code drywall to finish off your soundproofing project. Don't forget to tape mud and paint the finished drywall.

Now finally I would like to say a little bit about the acoustical caulk. Acoustical caulk is a cheap commodity when compared to the cost of other soundproofing agents, but it is one of the most essential parts of any soundproofing endeavor. Buy a good acoustical caulk and not some cheap silicone caulk. We are already being frugal with the soundproofing material; lets not skimp on the caulk. A good acoustical caulk is OSI-175 SC caulk or Tremco Smoke and Sound caulk. Both of these caulking compounds possess superb acoustical properties. If you have questions about acoustical caulk call one of the online soundproofing companies, they will be glad to help you.

Once the drywall is up and the rolled roofing is completely covered, you will discover that you have a well-soundproofed room and you did it a half the cost of using the professional soundproofing agents. That being said, today's modern soundproofing products are extremely effective and I feel very reasonably priced compared to other specialized building materials. In this article I just wanted to show that there are other ways to soundproof a wall or ceiling with out using the more costly professional soundproofing agents. I hope this narrative has been informative; it was a pleasure writing it, as there is so little information out on the net about soundproofing. Once again, this is Dr. Bob...Out!

Hurricane Preparedness - 30 Tips for Riding Out the Storm

Another hurricane season is here, and like some before, it's predicted to be an active one with quite a number of named storms, some projected to hit the US.

storm doors with pet door

For years we've heard "Have a kit, have a plan," but what kind of kit? Are kits really useful? And what kind of plan? What are the considerations? What should I actually DO in a hurricane?

STORM DOORS

As a short answer to that last question, we put together a short list of things you should do if a hurricane is headed your way. Keep in mind though that this is an intro list. You'll find the link to the full article below.

For now we'll assume that you're not in a coastal area, you're not under mandatory evacuation orders, and that you've decided to stay and shelter in place. So, we'll start by saying that under certain circumstances it is possible to ride out the storm safely, if you know how to R.E.A.C.T.:

Reinforcement - Have you prepared your home structurally in advance, even if it's just shutters?

Equipment - Do you have all the supplies you'll need on hand, or are you waiting for the last minute?

Awareness - Do you have a way to track the storm, and do you have a way for others to track you?

Cautions - Are you aware of the various risks involved in staying in place in a hurricane?

Timeline - You'll need to do a few things as the storm approaches, and timing is a factor.

For our "30 Tips" intro article, we'll cut directly to the "Timeline" portion of this piece so you can see a list of considerations for bracing against the storm:

Timeline

Some things you need to do well in advance of a major storm and some things have to wait until the last minute. In any event, with something as large and dangerous as a hurricane, there are always details that need to be tended to and you have to consider your timing in the process. These are presented in something of a chronological order and you'll notice these also happen to be arranged in an "outside in" order, meaning that you want to do the things that are farthest away from home first and work your way in.

Important note: Below when we say "out" referring to how close the storm is, we're referring to the nearest edge of the storm that's going to reach you first, and not the eye of the hurricane. Keep this in mind since most weather stations will measure from the eye of the hurricane. It's up to you to know the difference.

Before Hurricane Season Starts

1. Make sure you performed all the structural enhancements you could for your home.

2. First aid and CPR classes are great classes to take.

3. Make your decision well in advance on whether you want to evacuate or stay put.

A Week Out

This is about as long a warning as we'd have that a hurricane was heading toward any particular region.

4. Look at the structural integrity of your home and make sure you have all the shutter material and hardware you'll need already on hand.

5. If you have a gas-powered generator make sure it works. If it needs repairs you'll want to know now.

Three Days Out

This is about the last day you want to be out and about running errands or buying supplies.

6. Make sure your pantry is full as you'd like it to be.

7. Get longer shelf-life items like canned goods and have ways to cook such as charcoal, gas for your grill, etc.

8. Make sure you have a good supply of non-perishable "comfort foods" on hand. Include treats for your pets.

9. Check your stock of all medications, both prescription and over-the-counter. Include your pets here too.

10. Gas up all your vehicles and fill a couple of 5-gallon gas cans to keep on hand.

Two Days Out

At this point the weather forecast is going to be pretty accurate as to whether or not your vicinity will feel the effects of a hurricane.

11. Fill some empty milk jugs or plastic soda bottles with water and put them in the freezer (as many as you can fit). Let them freeze solid. If the power goes out, these will help keep your fridge and freezer cold longer.

12. Secure your more important household items such as backup computer disks, paperwork, heirlooms, etc. by putting them in plastic tubs.

One Day Out

13. Start doing some safety landscaping by removing dangerous tree limbs, loose yard furniture, and so forth.

14. Put your storm shutters in place.

Six to Eight Hours Out

At this point, you'll probably know whether or not the storm is going to be a direct hit for your area.

15. Take last minute photos of property and family members.

16. Recharge all your electronics (cell phone, laptop, etc.) while you still have power.

17. Turn your fridge and freezer down to their lowest setting to keep food colder longer should you lose power.

18. Move your cars to higher ground if your home might flood and move your more valuable furniture and possessions off the floor.

19. If flooding is not an issue, park your car in the garage or other protected area.

20. Brace your garage doors so they don't cave in during high winds.

21. Make sure the kids are home.

Two or Three Hours Out

Again, please remember that when we say "so and so hours out" we're referring to the leading edge of the storm that will hit you first, and not the eye of the storm.

22. Bring the kids in the house and have them help you with last minute stuff.

23. Bring in all outdoor pets. If they can fit in the house they should be brought inside the house.

24. Start building a "nest" in the room that's the safest area of the house. Put down a mattress, have some snacks and water handy, make sure you have a radio and flashlights all with extra batteries.

25. If the kids have bike or skateboard helmets have them put them on.

26. Start filling your extra water containers (bathtub, etc.) in anticipation of a loss of water.

27. If you can secure them (so they don't blow away), your outside trashcans can be used as rain barrels.

As the Storm Comes Rolling In

28. Unplug all the electronics you were charging and unplug any valuable electronics like your television, stereo, desktop computer, etc. to protect them against surge from lightning strike.

29. Close but don't lock all your interior doors to limit flying debris or wind flow should a window break.

30. Move to the "nest" you made in your safe area and stay put until the storm is over.

Install An Interior Or Exterior Door

Those looking to change a room should consider putting up a new door. Not only will it help with any insulation problems, it will change the décor.

storm doors with pet access

First, choose the type of door that will be put up. There are three basic groups to choose from. There are entry doors, interior doors and combination storm/screen doors. By following five steps entry doors can be replaced with ease. Once you have this skill under your belt you will be able to put up interior doors with no problem.

STORM DOORS

When putting up any door the general premise is the same. The only real difference is whether or not it is an exterior or interior door. You begin by taking off the old door. Tuck a wedge under the outside corner and release the hinges. Once the door is off there are two options available. The first one is to hang the door from loose-pin hinges. Part of the hinge is hooked into the door and the other half is hooked into the doorframe. If you are working in an old house, the hinge might not be so cooperative due to years of paint build up. When this happens you should unscrew the hinges and take off the doorframe to get the door off.

Next you will take the hinge leaves off of the door. You can hang new ones or use the old ones. Buff the old ones with a sander and use a clear protective coating to cover it. New hinges should be the exact same size as the previous ones.

Shape the hinges they way that you would like and put the new hinge leave on the frame of the door. The screws must be long enough to go trough the stud-wall framing and the frame of the door.

After that you will need to trim the door. Take notes from the previous door if needed. If the new door is in line with the old one than trimming may not be necessary. However, if the old door is not a good example, measure the door opening and leave a 1/8 bottom clearance and 1/16 at the side and top. If there is carpet to take into account you need to have a bottom clearance that is 3/4 more than that. A fine tooth saw will be needed for the trimming.

Get the door ready for the hinges. New mortises need to be made. There will be routed or craved out depressions in which the hinges blades will be placed. This will keep the surface level. The old door can be a pattern to follow for this or you can use the new door. Put in the doorway and wedge it 1/8 away from the bottom. Put the hinge locations on the door.

After that put the door on the latch edge and take a pencil or knife and trace the line to the door edge from every hinge. The new hinge on
of the door should be outlined with the hinge leaf template.

Use a wood chisel to leave marks on the hinge mortises. Level the cutes with the thickness of the leaf hinge. Three hinges is the usual standard for six foot tall doors.

Next you need apply some wood sealant to the door and put wood screws in the hinge leaves. Next hang the door.

Or maybe you like spending your weekends tromping through flea markets and garage sales looking for treasures or one-of-a-kind finds. Antique and vintage dressers can be a real steal, especially if they're buried in layers of old paint or finish. Most people won't want to bother with all the work of stripping and refinishing but you know a bargain when you see one. A little elbow grease (ok, maybe a lot of elbow grease) and some new drawer pulls and you'll have a piece that's worth at least ten times what you paid for it.

Of course a dresser doesn't have to be old or valuable to benefit from a facelift and the real secret to any dresser makeover is in the hardware. It's as easy as changing the old drawer pulls or knobs and you can find these at any home hardware store or home improvement center. If you're working with a wardrobe, which is basically a dresser and closet combined, you can also find matching cabinet handles and hinges as well.

It's Easy to Replace the Drawer Pulls and Knobs on Your Dresser

Replacing the drawer pulls on a dresser is a simple task. Just arm yourself with a screwdriver and you're set to go. Most home hardware such as drawer pulls and cabinet handles are attached with Phillips head screws but if you have an antique piece the screws may just have a single slot. It's important to remember that drawer pulls will generally have two attachment holes while knobs usually have just one. When replacing drawer pulls you'll want to make certain your new pulls will line up with the same holes.

Make note of the length of the old screws. If the new ones are too long or too short you can always replace them with the right size screws. Just make sure they have the same thread size and diameter to fit the new drawer pulls or knobs. If you really want to change the style completely and the holes just aren't going to line up with your new hardware, try looking for a matching back plate. Decorative back plates will let you drill a complete new set of holes while covering up the old ones.

Home Hardware Makes Dressers Versatile

When searching for your dresser hardware, you can use the same home hardware that you'd use for your kitchen and bath cabinet handles and drawer pulls. If you're looking for a modern sleek look check out stainless cabinet handles and knobs. They'll work just as well on a dresser and look great too. And remember dressers aren't just for bedrooms.

Need a little extra storage in the bath? Take a small chest of drawers add stainless cabinet handles. It's a great place for extra towels, shower and beauty products and hair driers and rollers.

Take an older dresser and a flea market table and chairs and paint every thing to match. Change the drawer pulls on the dresser, add a runner and you've just created a buffet and dining set. Dressers whether old or new are such versatile pieces of furniture and can be made to fit in almost any room of the home. What makes them even more versatile is the availability of almost limitless styles of cabinet handles and drawer pulls. So next time you're out making the garage sale rounds and spy that lonely dresser, consider taking it home and let your imagination soar!

So, when it comes to interior decoration of your home or workplace, these are an important accessory to consider. A correctly chosen door handle depicts your personality and style as well. One can add a touch of glamor and sophistication to his or her home by choosing a right door accessory. Now the question arises that how to choose good door handles for your home. There are many types available in market. Depending upon the type of material used in manufacturing, these are wooden, metal, crystal and plastic, etc. Among these, metal ones are most popular among interior decorators as well as home-makers. A metal door handle would probably be the first preference of any person, due to its durability and long-lasting. These are available in many shapes, styles and colors. Colorful metallic hues imparted by finishing done on these make them not only attractive, but sturdy as well.

STORM DOORS

Wooden handles are also in trend these days and give an option to experiment with interiors. One can get plain as well as painted wooden ones matching with wall paint or furniture. Intricately carved wooden door handles give a royal look to the doors and add a charm to the ambiance. Crystal pieces are also getting popular, but not as much as wooden and metal ones, due to less durability. Many colors and shapes like round, square, etc. are available in crystal material. But it is advised to use this type of door handles in less-traffic areas like drawing room, guest room, etc.

Antique ones are another option, which serve your purpose of durability and beautiful looks. These types of knobs add a traditional look to your home. Available in black to deep Grey colors, antique ones give your place an exotic look. But there are many factors which shall be kept under consideration while choosing door handles for your home. One shall decide on purchasing the door handles according to the room traffic. For example, kitchen and main door shall have strong and sturdily-constructed metal doors as they are used frequently, while crystal or wooden material can be used in drawing room. Take a look at interiors of each of your room and choose handles matching with them. Another important thing to be considered while purchasing these is their functionality. Do not go on looks only and make sure that it works properly on installation. Keeping all these factors under consideration will for sure result in a good choice for your place.

Garage Doors Insulated With Polyurethane Foam Are More Energy Efficient

No matter where you live having an insulated garage is a great feature on any home. There is nothing worse than walking from a warm house to a cold car even if it is inside your garage. You really cannot start your car and warm it up in the garage without endangering the rest of the family with carbon monoxide poisoning. The only alternative is to insulate your garage. If you happen to have a workshop in or attached to your garage you will find that it is only comfortable to work in during the fall and spring months due to excessive heat or cold. If the walls of your garage are already insulated then you will have no problem making it more energy efficient.  Of course garage doors insulated well are also necessary.

storm doors with screens

An insulated garage that features insulated windows and garage doors insulated correctly will make your garage into a four season comfort zone. The same goes if your garage has a side entrance door. It also should have more than a simple uninsulated storm door. Purchasing a quality insulated door will go a long way to keep your garage warm or cool depending on the season. Of course the greatest energy is lost is through the garage door. Most garage doors insulated with Styrofoam sheets are not very energy efficient. In terms of garage doors prices a quality insulated garage door will save you money.

Garage doors insulated with loose sheets of Styrofoam have lots of gaps for cold air to escape through. Most garage door companies use this cheap form of insulation because it is basically cheap. They defend the practice by saying it is cheaper to replace a damaged panel by simply using the same insulating panel. Polyurethane foam filled panels provide a much higher R value than the less efficient styrene panels at about the same cost. Garage doors insulated with polyurethane have no gaps because the foam fills and attaches to the inside of every part of the panel. No air gaps to let cold air in or out. In addition garage doors insulated with urethane foam are stronger making them more secure.

Good foam panel the garage door must have good joint seals between panels. Good seals are also needed along the door header and sides as well. Most quality doors will have a good seal on the bottom panel. It should be thick enough and flexible enough to fit the contour of the garage floor. All door seals should be able to remain flexible no matter what the temperature is or their insulating value will be greatly reduced. Garage doors insulated with polyurethane foam generally will have good long lasting vinyl end, top and bottom caps to protect the foam insulation from environmental degradation.

Making the effort to insulate your garage will pay dividends in energy conservation while giving you a warm garage in winter and a cool one in summer. In many cases the heat capture from that escaping from the residence will be enough to keep the garage comfortable on most winter days. Remember garage doors insulated with polyurethane foam provide the highest R value if they are constructed with the proper seals. A quality garage doors cost can be recovered can easily recovered through energy savings.

Do it Yourself Prefab Garage Kit

For homeowners searching for a way to gain a little extra space a metal garage may be the ideal solution. Prefab garage kits can easily be added to a property providing storage space that is protected from weather damage while remaining easily accessible. One other option that makes this a particularly economical solution is to build it yourself using a prefabricated metal garage kit.

screen doors lowes

This type of kit is designed to be easily assembled by the purchaser. Standard hardware is used so that the metal garage can be installed using common tools. Doing the assembly work personally saves the money that might be spent to hire a professional builder. Since they are available in a wide variety of styles and sizes prefabricated metal garages are easily customized.

DOORS LOWES

To aid in the construction process each prefabricated metal garage kit comes with a building manual that is easy to understand. Before starting the materials should be checked against the list in the manual to be sure that all pieces were shipped. This would be everything from the larger frame and panel pieces to the smaller standard sized bolts and polyethylene washers used in all the connections.

Building the metal garage would follow a process similar to these guidelines:

1. The major components of the garage are the build arches, raise arches, and end wall panels. To make construction quick and easy these pieces are pre-cut and pre-drilled and have weather stripping and heavy-duty curved angles. A local hardware store should have any tools needed for assembly if you do not own them.

2. A foundation must be laid before the building is installed. To ensure a stable building a solid, durable foundation should be chosen. The land to be used should be level and firm. An easy to install foundation is concrete that can be poured as a floating concrete perimeter footing.

3. The build arches and raise arches are put up first to form the side walls and roof. To avoid leakages the joints must be tight and the arches firmly attached to the foundation. Raising the arches may require assistance and for taller garages scaffolding may be needed.

4. The metal garage is finished with the end wall panels. To assist in accurate installation the panels are pre-cut and numbered. Their design allows them to easily be bolted onto the base connector and end arch panel. The end walls can have door and window openings installed that are steel-framed. Any type of door can be used to finish the project.

Prefab garage kits are useful for a multitude of situations. They provide extra storage and organizational space. This can function as storage for items used on occasion such as gardening equipment or outdoor activity gear. It can also be used for large, awkward items like lawn mowers or snow blowers. For recreation they can be formed into children's playhouses or into workshops. Whatever the need the installation of a prefabricated metal garage kit can add the needed space while remaining cost effective.

Exterior House and Shutter Colors

Most homeowners one day face the inevitable task of repainting their home. The project is plagued by substantial cost, time, planning, and labor. One silver lining to such an obligation is the ability to modify house colors. This decision, however, may seem just as burdensome as the actual labor. Complementary primary, secondary, and accent colors usually need to be selected.

mirrored closet doors lowes

Fortunately, professional color schemes have been developed by major paint manufacturers offering exterior grade paints. Millions of dollars have been invested into creating simple modern color palates. Most stores offer presentation booklets and paint chips which allow homeowners to make an educated decision. Online tools, such as Benjamin Moore's "Personal Color Viewer", allow the viewer to select wall, trim, garage, door, and shutter color for various home styles. Colors, however, can look different (usually darker) when applied to large outdoor areas than on a small paint chip or viewed online. Therefore, it is recommended that a quart of the selected colors be applied to a section of the home before purchasing paint for the entire house. In the evaluation phase, consider roof color, landscape and vegetation around the home, and adjacent neighboring properties which may influence the final appearance.

DOORS LOWES

After a color scheme has been chosen, decide what color to apply to what area of the house. Window trim is often a different color than the main surface. Exterior shutters and doors are often a third color. In situations where exterior shutters are just being added to the house, they are commonly the same color as the front door.

Vinyl exterior shutters require the least amount of monetary investment, short-term work, and long-term maintenance. To install, simply drill a few pilot holes into the shutter panel and screw the shutters directly to the building. Non-functional vinyl exterior shutters are sold pre-finished, and the color is molded throughout so fading will be minimal. The shutters will not need to be painted, and will only require an occasional washing to keep them looking their best. Paintable vinyl shutters are available if a custom color is necessary, and multiple colors can be used to create a more unique and original shutter. Online shutter companies generally mail color samples on request.

Wood exterior shutters are slightly more expensive but more authentic in appearance. Start with a premium grade wood shutter, like incense cedar, which will then need to be finished before they are installed. Consult with the paint manufacturer to determine the best combination of primer and paint for the optimum finish. Stationary wood shutters can be attached directly to the building with exterior grade screws or bolts. Functional shutters require exterior hinges, shutter dogs, and bolts for proper operation. Hardware can also be used on non-functional exterior shutters to give them a more distinct genuine appearance. Exterior shutters will generally need to be repainted as often as the house.

As with any home improvement project, make selections for both personal appeal and resale. In most situations, exterior shutters should not stand out, but should accent the entire project. If the entire process seems too daunting, professional consultants are available for hire.

The Whirlwind of Change Creates a Perfect Storm of Emotions - Go Within to Find Your Answers

What do you do when you feel that all hope is gone? That you just cannot go on any more? When you feel all alone and believe that you have no future, what do you do? Have you ever had those thoughts? I am sure many have.

storm doors for sale

An incident occurred recently which brought these questions to mind. This is how I used to think and I also know how easy it is to fall back into that no-exit thinking pattern. When you allow one stray, doubtful thought into your mind, it calls all its relatives, friends and acquaintances. Nip it in the bud immediately and think of something else!

STORM DOORS

THE ARRIVAL OF CHANGE

When change enters your lives, you feel it - it is that tangible. You feel afraid so you fight it, trying to push it away. That is when the experience becomes painful. You can control how you react to change but not the inevitability of it.

First ask yourself: What is the worst that can happen? Then prepare to accept it. Then proceed to improve on the worst. Dale Carnegie

THE IRRESISTIBLE URGE TO ACT

In the calmer moments, you feel the irresistible urge to act and that momentum moves you inexorably forward. You feel powerful when you are going with the flow even though you do not know where exactly it's taking you. But all the same you feel good.

Then it all stops. There is a "flat" period; a calm in the eye of this whirlwind of change and you feel relieved. You mistakenly think it is over - that you can relax. It is really your opportunity to take charge and continue advancing at your pace. Change is an intrinsic part of life you know, so it will never be over until you die.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE - ASK FOR HELP

When everything in your life is changing and you do not know what to do, ask for help. That is something I never did until it felt like I was drowning.

I learned my lesson which is why I am telling you now - ask for help when you need it. If you do not have someone close, then meditate or pray - the universe will answer in a surprising way. Expect it.

Maturity is the ability to reap without apology and not complain when things don't go well. Jim Rohn

GO WITH THE FLOW

When you control your thoughts, you control your reaction. When you change your reaction, you change the outcome. When you do none of these things, you end up being tossed and thrown about in a perfect storm of emotions.

Watching helplessly as your life is flung about and eventually smashed against the wall of your resistance. You will then be forced to bury the remains, pick up the remaining pieces and create a new one. Therefore, when change comes knocking at your door, open up and let it in. Resistance is an exercise in futility.

Go with the flow and while you might feel adrift at times as you are tossed about by life's events, stay strong. Find an outlet for your angst. Be still, centre yourself, and go within because the answers you seek are inside you.

FIND A WAY TO YOU

Go within to find your answers by starting a journal, finding a meditation practice which suits you, starting an exercise programme that is fun for you. Exercise works because you release the frustrations and toxins which accompany stress. After which you feel focussed and calm and quiet on the inside.

Cry all the tears of injustice you want then pick yourself up, dust yourself off, focus on what you want and get on with it. Railing at others for their lack of support is a waste of energy because if you cannot make sense of what is happening in your life, how could you possibly expect others to do so.

When you lash out, most people are not evolved enough to walk away and they will respond in kind. So keep your mouth shut and save yourself a world of hurt.

Follow your heart, but be quiet for a while first. Ask questions, then feel the answer. Learn to trust your heart. Unknown

RECONNECT TO THE CALM INNER YOU

Go inward. Yes, go inward to your ever welcoming still centre. Be quiet. Sit in silence. Listen to silence. Hear your breath. Feel the beat of your heart. Know that you are alive. You are thriving though you know it not.

You may at times feel as if you are striving instead, swimming upstream and meeting endless obstacles. You are and you will until you make it a habit to take a meditation break at least twice a day, in the morning and evening to reconnect to the calm inner you.

CONCLUSION

Must and have to's are words I avoid using. In this case however, you must accept what you cannot change regardless of how painful it is. Resistance really is futile. Understand the lesson life is teaching you through that experience, and learn to become still. Inner calm is essential to your well-being.

Installation of an Entry Door - Direct Fasten to Masonry

I've always enjoyed installing residential entry doors. There's something about thinking and working in three planes that appeals to me. Making customers happy and feeling comfortable in their home environment makes me happy, too. Nothing can compare to the satisfaction of knowing a job has been well done, seeing and feeling a beautiful and properly installed door operate smoothly. In modern homebuilding techniques, most housing built here in the Salt Lake City area after the mid-1960's is 2x4 or 2x6 wood stick frame construction with an exterior veneer of brick, stucco, or some type of lap siding. Prior to that time, many, if not most, homes around here were built using four inch wide cinderblock (4"x8"x16") masonry walls with a brick exterior veneer.

storm doors black

Thermal efficiency properties of new door systems have improved greatly over what was available forty or fifty years ago. New jambs allow for air-tight vinyl weather stripping and adjustable thresholds with vinyl door bottom sweeps. Low maintenance fiberglass or metal doors are sandwiched with foam insulation. And doors with windows come with thermal glass. Installing a new door in an existing older home has become a highly desired remodeling upgrade.

STORM DOORS

These days, installing a pre-hung entry door system (including jambs) to new wood stick frame construction is generally pretty straight forward; you can just nail, or preferably, screw through the jambs to the framing studs behind. If adjustments are necessary, just pull the nail or back out the screw, re-align the jamb using builder's shims, and try again.

But what about retrofitting a new entry door system in an older home built with cinderblock masonry walls? You can't use the same technique of just nailing through the jambs, the masonry will just deflect and bend a regular framing nail. Cut nails might possibly work, but the chances for jambs alignment adjustments are slim to zero, while the chances of masonry cracks or half-moon hammer head marks in the jambs are almost a given. Masonry screws need to be started in pre-drilled cinderblock holes, which can be drilled through the jamb, but I've never been satisfied with their holding power alone, where the cinderblock is prone to crumble around the holes while adjusting screws and snugging shims tight. Experience has taught me to always insert plastic expansion sleeves in the cinderblock to properly fasten masonry screws.

I believe installation direct to masonry is the height of challenge for an entry door, where skills and patience for a carpenter are truly tested. You really only have one chance to get it right - screw hole mistakes in the cinderblock don't allow for incremental jambs adjustments. Here is where carpentry meets art, you must think and be creative. So, the satisfaction of a properly installed door in this case becomes, at least for me, a real thrill.

On the initial site visit to measure up the door, you're going to tap on the walls to see if they are drywall or plaster. Of course, you're going to check the concrete threshold step for level. Carpenters never assume anything, right? Measurement of the exterior brick opening overall height from threshold to lintel will be noted. Any further uncertainty about whether a house was built with masonry walls can be at least partly resolved by measuring the exterior brick opening overall width. A width measurement slightly off by about one-half inch from the nominal brick opening is a sure tip-off that you're going to be facing the direct fasten to masonry challenge. Adjust your installation estimate accordingly for some extra labor.

I've learned by the hard way of experience that it's necessary to remove old existing jambs carefully. If directly fastened to masonry with cut nails, jambs removal may break out the cinderblock unless the jambs are cut into short, manageable lengths.

An out of level concrete threshold step can be ground flat by a concrete cutting subcontractor, or the door threshold can be adjusted by unscrewing and repositioning in the jamb by the amount out of level.

Any attached brickmold and casing must be removed from the jambs to make installation easier with shimming. Also, brickmold will probably have to be ripped in width to fit the overall brick opening width and height.

With the rough opening clean and prepped for the new door and jamb, move the system into place as one with door hung on hinges. Temporarily shim the side jambs tight top and bottom ends in the rough opening. Temporary shims at the bottom hinge may also be required to straighten door sag. The top hinge will sag, just be aware that you will compensate for it later with shims and a screw to snug it when the door is installed permanently. Use of a level isn't necessary, just align the jambs flush with the interior plaster and shift shims to square the door in the jambs with even spacing reveal. Tightly wedged shims will allow you to operate the door carefully. Open and close to check the door touching the weather stripping evenly top to bottom for any possible jambs twist. Adjust as necessary, even though jambs may not flush with plaster top to bottom. A good carpenter won't assume the original door was installed correctly, right? Check the brickmold reveal, you should have consistent and even measurements side to side and top to bottom. It's unusual to have brick out of plumb to any great extent. Adjust shims again as necessary. Index the jambs in the rough opening and the shims to jambs with pencil for reference when installing the system permanently.

Remember, you only have one chance to get this installation right, so be patient - you will be rewarded with a satisfying outcome. When you're satisfied that the door system is in the correct position, drill through the thickest part of the hinge jamb with a regular drill at the hinges areas, and then further drill into the cinderblock with a hammer drill. Drill the strike jamb in the same corresponding locations, with the middle drilling positioned between the strike and deadbolt mortises. Countersink jambs holes to flush the masonry screw heads. It may be necessary to remove the door from the hinges for this step, just remember to check the indexed jambs alignment to be sure nothing has moved.

Remove shims and then remove door system from the rough opening. This must be done to install the plastic expansion sleeves into the holes drilled into the cinderblock. Then re-assemble door system and re-shim into the indexed positions in the rough opening. At last, now fasten jambs to the cinderblock with the masonry screws, using shims at each screw location. Fine tune screw adjustments by wedging the shims to get the reveals around the door even. Adjust top and bottom jamb shims as necessary. Open and close door to check touching the weather stripping evenly top to bottom for any possible jambs twist. Some slight remaining jambs twist can be adjusted by persuading the jambs with a block and a hammer. Be careful. Now nail the shims permanently in position with a pneumatic nail gun shooting squarely into the cinderblock. Don't worry, the nails should sink into the cinderblock as long as they are the proper length and are nailed squarely and firmly. When in doubt, nail into mortar joints. Don't nail into the very hard brick. I try to hide any nailing behind the weather stripping whenever possible. Finally, protruding shim ends may be trimmed off with a dove-tail saw.

Squirt foam insulation between cinderblock and back side of jambs. The foam can help glue the jambs into place. Then all that's left to do is apply the frosting - trim of brickmold, casing, and a shiny brass doorknob. Stand back and feel satisfied knowing you've accomplished something out of the ordinary, and made the customer happy.

The Cottage Law Brings Us Back to the Basics

The term "cottage" originally referred to the family cottage (home) familiar to most rural communities; and described as a source of pleasure, family bonding, and individual rest and relaxation. When we refer to the "Cottage law" we are addressing legal tools employed by a state government to establish a legal arrangement for low risk food production prepared at a home residence.

security doors lowes

A "Cottage Food Production Operation" involves a person using their own kitchen facility to produce food items that are not potentially hazardous, including bakery products, jams, jellies, candy, dry mixes, spices and some sauces.

DOORS LOWES

"Cottage laws" are different for every state so home-based bakers and food processors should check with their individual state regulatory agency to learn about specific rules, regulations and labeling requirements. It should be noted that there are states that have no "cottage law" at all and simply do not allow home food processors to produce food products from home; a licensed commercial kitchen must be use.

A "Cottage Food Production Operation" may or may not be exempt from inspection and licensing. For example in the State of North Carolina a Compliance Officer from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will come to the food processors home and inspect it, that is not always the case, however many food products, including those produced and packaged by a "Cottage Food Production Operation", may be subject to food sampling conducted by the regulatory agency involved to determine if a food product is misbranded or contaminated.

There are currently 13 states (Alabama, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and Utah) that allow home-based baking and food processing and it is imperative that potential home food processors contact the regulatory agency in their state if they plan to prepare foods for public consumption.

Not all areas of a state allow home food processing. The is a gray area involving individual cities, counties and towns with regard to "cottage laws" which may disallow home-based baking and food processing, thereby requiring the food processors to only prepare food from a licensed commercial kitchen.

The laws are not consistent, and it is the responsibility of the individual food processor to learn what laws and regulations are applicable to their residence. Food processors are allowed to sell their products at Farmer's Markets, to the general public and in some cases wholesale depending on the regulatory agency rules for sales and distribution. There is really no way of knowing how many home-based bakers and small food processors there are across America, however one thing is for certain and that is, today the consumer's desire for homemade, back to the basics type foods with no preservatives or additives, along with local organic produce, opens the door for all food entrepreneurs ready and willing to become essential commodities in their community.

Spruce Up Your Front Yard For a More Welcome Looking Home

In general, landscaping projects for the backyard are more popular than the front yard, though recently, American homeowners seem to be giving more attention to their front yards in the past decade. A nicely landscaped front yard adds a lot of character to a home, and as a side benefit, actually increases the value of the home as well. To visitors of your home, a well decorated front yard is very inviting, and it's the first thing that is noticed about your home.

storm doors lowes

Lots of landscaping ideas are available to you, but whichever style you choose, an important part of landscaping is to add your own touch. You want your guests and visitors to see a little bit of your personality in your yard, just as you would in decorating your living room, dining room, or even bathroom. Think of your front lawn as an extension of your home, because that's exactly what it is.

STORM DOORS LOWES

A good tip to keep in mind is to make sure the look doesn't interfere with the functionality of your walkway and porch. You don't want branches or bushes overhanging into the walkway, and you don't want to clutter up the path to your door with too many statues, plants, or other decorative items. If you have too many things in your yard it can end up looking like a jumbled mess, so always try to keep things relatively simple in your styling.

Speaking of simple, you can do a lot to add some flair to your front lawn with just a few plants. Properly placed plants, both in the ground as well as in pots, can really add some brightness to your yard. Another simple thing you can do is to give some attention to your grass. If there are any brown spots, remedy these patches with some fertilizer and extra watering. If you have some problem areas, you can get some great advice from the employees at your local Lowes or Home Depot.

Always remember that the focal point of your yard should be your door. Whichever type of decorations you choose, make sure the path to your door looks warm and inviting.

How to Adjust Your Sliding Door

If you have a sliding glass patio type door, you may need to adjust it periodically. If it is hard to open or close, or the latch doesn't work properly, you can often quickly and easily fix it yourself. Most likely you have a sliding door with wheels on the top and bottom, and a lever type lock mounted in the handle.

storm doors black

If the door is hard to open and close, there are a few things to try to fix it. First of all, if your door has wheels (which they you probably do, you just may not be able to see them), there should be two little round "buttons" covering holes on the bottom part of the door. If your carefully remove these covers with a flathead screwdriver, you will see two screws inside the holes they were covering. Using a screwdriver, turn these screws and the wheels will move up or down. Do this in slight (1 turn) increments until the door operates smoothly.

If adjusting the wheels does not work, you may simply have to lubricate the track. If you have a wooden door with a metal track, use WD40 to lightly lubricate the wheels and track. Open and close the door a few times and it should move more freely. If you have a vinyl door DO NOT USE WD40, it, or any other petroleum product, will destroy the vinyl.. In this case you will want to use a silicone lubricant, which can be purchased at most home improvement stores in spray or gel.

If neither of these methods worked, you may need to contact a professional for adjustment or replacement. The door may be old and it has warped, or it may have been installed incorrectly in the first place.

If your door does not latch correctly or securely, try this method. On the inside portion of the sliding door, you will see the hook part of the latch, and just above or below that will be a small screw. By turning this screw, you can adjust how far in or out the hook goes. Try adjusting this, and observe the hook and latch to see if it is hitting the back side of the jamb, or is not extending out far enough to hook the latch.

If that adjustment doesn't work, you may have to adjust the position of the catch latch. This is found on the inside of the jamb and looks like a small square "eye" latch. There are screws holding this in place, and by slightly loosening the screws and adjusting the position up or down, you can place the latch to where the hook will connect with it.

If neither of these adjustments fix the problem, contact a professional door installer or the manufacturer.

Back Plate Lever Door Handles

storm doors for sale

When you need elegance and sophistication for an older door, or perhaps to compliment an older style house, then you should consider purchasing some back plate lever handles. These are designed to have the familiar elongated escutcheon, which works both as a thumb plate for the hand while it is using the door and an attractive ornament when the door is not in sure. These features mean that they are very popular with home owners, and can add an element of traditional furniture style both inside and outside the house.

Monet Door Handles

These handles have a very long back plate, around 180mm from end to end, with the door emerging from the plate for about 47mm. The handle is gently curved, with a slight upward lift at the end to give extra comfort to the user. Made in rose brass with brushed nickel, or PVD brass, or a bright coffee-coloured metal, the Monet set of door handles comes with fixing screws and a 7.9mm spindle which can simply be pushed through the door. For users who want extra security, it is possible to buy the Monet handles with a lock in the base of the plate. This lock can then be attached to the 3-lever mortice lock which is also available in this range, and will provide security when used on the outside door of a home.

Nimbus Door Handles

The Nimbus is a completely different style from the Monet, and this shows most clearly in the handle, which is designed rather in the shape of a hairbrush, with a large extending shaft which is connected to the spindle inside the door, and then a rounded lever designed to be used to open the door. This rounded edge is covered with a different colour metal, intended to show off the different stages of the design. The lever is carefully made to ensure the most comfort possible to the user. This design appears in colours of brushed nickel with a polished chrome edge.

Storm Door Handles

While the Storm door handle could be described as an attempt to mix and match the two previous options, it really stands out on its own. The very long back plate is 185mm, over 50mm more than the length of the lever handle (which is 127mm). The handle itself is slightly curved, although not enough to be very noticeable, and is a single length of handle, rather like the Monet. It features the different colour metal on the palm pad, as exhibited by the Nimbus, which makes it an ideal match for a more modern house. The Storm door handle is also available with a lockable back plate which again matches a mortice lock in the same style.

When you are looking for door handles with an additional back plate, you need to consider the different roles which style and tradition can play in the design of the door handles. The back plate is a very traditional feature of doors, and can be seen on most Victorian-age homes, but the plate can also be adapted for more modern use, showing that it is adaptable for the times we live in. If you have a traditional home, then you may choose a more traditional back plate design, but for people living in new-build houses, modern back plate features on handles can provide the nod to tradition that they were looking for, without sacrificing style.

Types of Door Handles

Most modern back plate door handles feature brushed nickel and chrome designs which flatter the design of the plate, creating a mirrored surface that can really attract attention wherever they are placed.

Creating A Luxurious Bathroom Starts With The Bathroom Vanity And Cabinet

If you have been to Lowes or Home Depot lately you will see a larger selection of unique bathroom vanities. Most of these vanities are way over priced. These bathroom vanities look very appealing and it provides for an impulse buy, but if you shop around a little you will find these same vanities at a much better price.

A quick example; we found a "42 inch Euro Vanity online at an RTA kitchen cabinet and bathroom vanity website for around 0 dollars. That same vanity at the Home Depot web site was almost 0 dollars. We also found out that the Home Depot's vanity was made of particle board, while the RTA site uses real wood in their bathroom vanity construction.

DOORS LOWES

If you are looking for a very best in bathroom vanities, or even what they would call bathroom furniture, the internet has the stores beat hands down. The websites provided bathroom vanities that were hand painted, they used imported wood, and they were of solid construction. Many of them even come with the vanity tops, hardware, and matching mirrors included. These vanities would be a great addition to any bathroom that wants to stand out from the average.

Most of the cabinets or vanities that you buy these days are labeled RTA. This simple phrase stands for ready to assemble. If you're buying retail you will see assembled cabinets and cabinets in boxes. It's basically the same thing. A building supply super store might assemble some of the vanities or cabinets and charge you an even higher price; they also sell RTA cabinets and market these products to the do it your self people. Either way it is the same cabinet, we just found out that it is easy and cost effect to assemble the cabinets ourselves. Some of the real nice bathroom vanities come assembled and are shipped directly to you, but others can easily be put together with a flat head screw drive. All of the RTA bathroom vanities and kitchen cabinets come with one simple page of instructions.

The shipping is an additional cost, but when you factor in the savings you get from buying online, you still come out far ahead of buying at a retail store. This is because most of the bathroom vanity websites, and the kitchen cabinet websites, are importing and warehousing the items. They have no need for a store and the high costs associated with having a retail location, so they can provide the same items at a fraction of the cost. Another nice feature is that they deliver to your door. No fighting through traffic, waiting in store lines, and you are saving gas money at the same time.

So after we got past that, we went online and found a wonderful bathroom vanity website. We also found that the better websites will have a large selection of kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities. This usually is a sign of a decent online store. But, make sure you go to a few different websites, you will see a vast difference in pricing and be careful, some sites might state "free shipping" but they will make that cost up in higher prices. In the end we found a good site and it provided us with the high end style bathroom vanity we were looking for and it also gave us some great ideas for other projects around the house.

Screen Dog Doors

Screen dog doors will facilitate your pet's easy entrance and exit to and from the house. When you install a screen dog door, you never have to open the door for your pet whenever it wishes to come in the house or go out. Buying a screen dog door is like buying your dog independence and buying yourself more time - your pet can go whenever he wants, and you never have to wait for him. But wait - before you go and buy a screen dog door, consider a very important factor - the size of your dog.

storm doors with doggie doors

A screen dog door, in more than one way, is a lot more fragile compared to vinyl flaps and the electronic dog door. If what you have is a robust and muscular dog, do not install a screen dog - it will not last a week. Because screen dog doors are less sturdy, they are only ideal for dogs weighing not more than at least 30 pounds.

STORM DOORS

The screen dog door needs to be high and wide enough so that your dog can freely push and step through it without any hesitation. The dog ought to be able to fit into the space you have provided - it should not be too tight nor too big for him. There has to be some allowance, but only enough to made sliding through comfortable. Anything bigger can pose security threats.

When properly measured, cut, and installed into a sturdy backdrop, screen dog doors permit dogs and cats to contentedly pass through. They can now go outside whenever they please and come back in when they get bored outdoors.

Guide to Wooden Front Doors

The very first impression that other people will acquire from your home comes from your very own front door. For this reason, it is important that your door shows appeal and is of sound structure. There is a rich supply in the varieties of designs and materials from which you can choose the door which perfectly suits your desired needs and purposes. Wooden front doors are a great choice for those who not only wish to have a sense of security inside their home but as well for those who desire custom entry doors which will enhance and compliment the exterior portions to your home.

storm doors with pet door

Wooden front doors are commonly chosen among shoppers over other types of custom entry doors for the different elements that they offer as opposed to conventional entry doors. Wooden doors as well as hollow doors are popular choices, too. They perform the job adequately and can be very lovely in appearance, however, do not quite meet the performance and integrity of wooden front doors. The solidity and genuine feeling of strength and security that you feel upon opening and closing your custom wooden doors cannot be met by any other door of a lighter weight.

STORM DOORS

Light-weight doors tend to leave home owners with a broken sense of security that wooden front doors offer. The hollowed nature in conventional doors give all appearances of quality with its barely-there resistance, but when you stop to look at the bigger picture, how secure could the door truly be in protecting you and your family? Although custom entry doors are noticeably heavier than traditional doors, there will be no mistaking the inherent comfort and security you will feel each night as you close your door and lock it from the inside.

Another major consideration when purchasing wooden front doors is how they will enhance the outside appearance of your home. Just as with other doors, wooden front doors come with endless possibilities for custom modification and design. Undoubtedly, it will not take long for you to find a door which expresses your unique style and that of your home.

You may be someone who desires a beautiful intricately carved custom design in your wooden door, or perhaps you are more preferential towards a wood paneled door that is has a smoother feel. Either way, you will find that there are few difficulties in achieving the exact design of your choice. Installation of general and stained-glass windows are also just a couple of the extended options in your custom entry doors. Remember while choosing the perfect design for your custom doors that it should represent your individual style in a unique way that will stand apart and accentuate the entrance to your home. This is a great way to add personal touch to your home that is unable to be duplicated. Stained wood lends your home an elegant and genuine impression to the outside world that your home is one which is cherished, loved and cared for. Visitors will be welcomed into a home that holds an authentic personality and warmth within it.

An important thing that you should focus on when purchasing the right detailed fixtures for your home is that aesthetic appeal can be easily achieved at an affordable cost if you do your comparative shopping and research adequately. For that reason, remember while shopping that the added security with a customized wooden front door will be an excellent addition to your home that will provide you as well as your family with a secured feeling in your home and the appearance of high custom design that anyone who passes will surely appreciate.

Estimating Garage Doors Pricing

Estimating garage doors pricing is important when planning to install a new or replacement garage door. It is important that you know what type of garage door you will want and need to install. One of the first things you must do is to check on the local building codes that must be followed when installing a new door. If you happen to live in a hurricane high wind risk zone then in most cases you will have to select a high wind code door. No matter where you live you should do a good job of researching the best garage door for your geographic and climatologically location.

storm doors for sale

In general your overhead garage doors are the weakest structural part of your home. It is important that you do not scrimp on the quality of your garage doors. Garage doors pricing may or may not be a good indication of real door quality. Good quality custom wooded garage doors may cost as much as ,000 but will provide poor protection from the elements especially from severe storms. Where as a quality steel reinforced door will stand up to 140 mile per hour winds and deter break ins for as little as 0 when self installed.

STORM DOORS

Again it really pays to do your homework when selecting a garage door for your home or business. In terms of garage doors pricing probably the cheapest place to purchase a garage door is from one of the major home improvement chains. Both Home Depot and Lowe's offer not only a good selection of doors but also the technical advice needed to do a good job of self installation. In addition they will provide you will contractors that will do the installation for you if you are not capable of doing it yourself. You can expect to pay from 30 to 50 percent more for a standard sized installation. Installation costs should include the removal and disposal of the old existing garage door and re-attaching your existing door opener. Prices should include parts labor and taxes.

Garage doors pricing for custom doors that use non standard opening may cost considerably more. So too will the cost of special door designs and materials increase prices. In all cases make sure you have a good written price quote that covers all aspects of installation. In most cases you will need to have a minimum of 12 inches of header clearance and 5 inches of side clearance to make a good installation. You also need to take condition of the garage into consideration. A rough or poor floor condition will prevent the door seal from working properly. It is really important to ask a lot of questions when asking for a garage installation quote.

Making a list of garage doors pricing that includes all the options your are considering will help you in making your cost estimates. These are just general estimates and should be considered guidelines only. Always get a written cost estimate prior to any work being done. Always be willing to negotiate for lower prices especially during this time of lower construction demands. If you do your research you will find the right garage door at the right garage doors pricing.

Choosing a Roofing Shingle? What Brand? What Type?

Installing a new roof can be an expensive home improvement. Be sure to consider all your options before pulling the trigger on this project that should only be done once by the average homeowner. When installed per the manufacturers requirements, your new roof should last you 30 years in a regular climate.

storm doors lowes

1. Style / Design
Yes, there are many styles and designs to choose from when shopping for a new roof. I will share that about 95% of the new roofs installed nowadays are of the 30 year dimensional asphalt shingles. This design provides the most bang for your buck. 20 year shingles are the least expensive, however, are being phased out of many of the manufacturers product lines. 25 yr shingles, also referred to as '3 Tab shingles or strip shingles' are a less costly alternative, but not by much. With the 30yr dimensional shingle, you are getting a heavier, more durable and aesthetically pleasing shingle. The multi-dimensional profile hides many of the dips and swoops you may have on your aging home.

STORM DOORS LOWES

In some areas of the country, such as Florida and Southern California, clay tile roofs are very common. These roofs are considerably more expensive, but do not need future replacement.

Given the average American climate, I would start my search in the 30yr dimensional market.

2. Brand
Stick with the most pronounced, popular, and time tested brands. Having installed and handled at least 20 of the main shingle brands, I feel I have a good idea on the quality that each of the manufacturers produce. In my opinion, the top two in the industry are GAF (Timberline is the 30yr product) and CertainTeed (Landmark is their 30yr product). Your installer will have access to these two brands through their supplier. As a tip, Home Depot exclusively carries the GAF brand. Some other brands to consider are the Owens Corning shingles (exclusively carried at Lowes and most shingle supply houses) and Tamko shingles.

Be aware and do your research on any brand that your installer suggests. Make sure it is reputable and has a history. Often installers push a product that they may get the best rebates on, which doesn't necessarily make it the best shingle. In fact, in many cases you may see a roofer pushing an off brand shingle that has horrible quality because it may be the cheapest shingle available to him, allowing him to make a larger margin on the job.

3. Color
Many customers ask me how large a role color plays on the heat of their attic space. It is true that the darker the roof, the more sun it attracts. Remember that most all roof colors are dark, so most every color is going to take on heat. The difference between a brown and a black roof, in terms of heat, is not much at all. I would definitely not advise considering installing white shingles. They do make these, but white shingles get dirty right away and look horrible after a short time.

My answer is that if you vent your attic space sufficiently using Continuous Ridge Vent or Powered Vents, you should not have to sacrifice the look of your house because of the concern of a dark color attracting too much heat. Feel free to choose a color for your shingles based on what matches the exteriors of your home best. As a tip, most designers try to choose a shingle color that shares a hue that is held in the color of the front door or shutters. Concentrate your efforts on making sure the installer provides for adequate ventilation, and you can choose your color based on what cooperates well with your existing exterior.

Tip: Most installers or local suppliers should be able to provide you with a list of addresses of homes in your area that have a specified color that had been recently installed. Sometimes it is very difficult to envision a shingle color based on an internet photo or small sample board.
